How to be a Star and Stand Out!

Plenty of people will be looking for a job right now, it is getting to be a crowded space with many individuals chasing the limited roles available, so how do you increase your chances and stand out?

Here is some great advice, compiled by the Recruitment@RainbowHR Recruitment Team:

  1. Read what the recruiter is asking you, for example if they ask you to provide a cover letter outlining why you are a good fit for the role, then provide a cover letter or if additional information is requested such as your notice period or your willingness to relocate then provide the answers. Too many people skim a job description and attach a CV and hit “apply” without fully reading what has been asked, this will absolutely disadvantage you. Make the cover letter specific to the role and avoid simply repeating what is on your CV, read the description, how do you fit in, what can you offer, what makes you a better candidate than others applying?
  2. Speaking of your CV, make sure it is up to date and you are highlighting your skills in relation to what has been asked, many people submit the same CV for every role, remember others are competing and you need to make sure your skills and experience stand out. Have up to date contact information (mobile number and email address). Our Star CV Guide is available on request just email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we can provide all the details to create a great CV, what to include and how to lay it out, take the time to read some and hone your CV to perfection.
  3. A covering email is a must – this is the best way to help you stand out. Ensure your letter is tailored to exactly what the role requirements are, in simple bullet points. Put yourself in the shoes of the person reviewing your CV, they are looking at considerable levels of applications – if your CV looks a close match, you are more likely to be seen.
  4. Keep a note of the roles you applied for, a simple spreadsheet will suffice, this way you have the details to hand when a recruiter contacts you, rather than standing out for the wrong reasons be on the ball and show the recruiter you are serious about your job search.
  5. You can’t help but notice the rise in video technology within recruitment – Skype, Zoom, Teams, Hangout etc, video interviewing was on the rise pre Covid-19 but has been thrust to the front and is now commonplace and will continue to be a part of the interview process as we emerge lockdown. At Rainbow HR we have seen first-hand how a poor video interview can blow your chances, the good news is with some simple preparation you can ensure you give it your best shot, come across well and be in with the best possible chance of success.
  • Find a quiet place, free from interruptions, let others in your home know not to interrupt.
  • Check that your computer’s audio and webcam is working and set up correctly.
  • Place your phone in silent mode or switch off.
  • Close any unnecessary web browser tabs and applications.
  • Dress professionally.
  • Make sure you don’t have any confidential information on show (white boards/post-it notes etc), some video software allows you to choose a background, others have a setting where you can blur the background.
  • Have a pen, notepad and copy of your CV and the job description to hand.
  • When listening, nod and smile to show you are engaged.
  • Check the link to the site works, don’t wait till a minute beforehand to discover you need a code or a phone number to join and you have not been sent it.
  • Practice with a friend (most sites are giving free accounts at the moment), this way you get to play around with the lighting, camera position, how you sit etc.

It's always good to follow up with an email to thank the person for their time and to let them know how much your enjoyed meeting them – all be it virtually!
